The history.
First of all, it was sold new to David Piper, a racing driver from Great Britain, in 1963, this right-hand drive 250 GTO was finished in brilliant BP racing green.
Piper raced the car with considerable success at many venues including Mallory Park, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Daytona and Monza etc.
Also, during the winter of 1963/64 he modified chassis 4491 with a reduced windscreen and a new profiled roof.
The car changed hands several times subsequently until 1981, when its current Italian owner restored it to its original configuration, removing the Piper modifications.
Finally, the CMC-introduced vehicle raced at Silverstone on 20 July 1963, finishing second in OA and second in GT class. Other achievements include the fourth OA at Monza and the first OA at Kyalami, to name just a few.
The Fascination.
The 250 GTO from the 1960s holds a very special fascination among Ferrari fans. With it, the Scuderia managed to create the racing car of the century, which still enjoys cult status today, both for its numerous sporting successes and for its timeless elegance.
A road-legal racing car was born that allowed drivers to travel alone to races. The basis of the 250 GTO was the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB model. The 250 means displacement in cubic centimeters per cylinder.
Ferrari first introduced the vehicle at the January 1962 annual press conference in Maranello. The development of the GTO was carried out under the direction of Giotto Bizzarrini and took place at Scaglietti, where almost all the vehicles were subsequently built.
