Ferrari 512 S

Ferrari 512 S #23

Race: 1971 24 Hours of Daytona

Driver: Ronnie Burcknum / Tony Adamowicz

History

The Ferrari 512 S was born to compete against the Porsche 917 in the 1970 World Sportscar Championship. Equipped with a naturally aspirated five-liter V12 engine producing close to 550 hp, it was one of the most spectacular prototypes of its time. Although the Porsche 917 dominated much of the season, the 512 S provided memorable moments, such as its victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Today, it is one of the most admired and highly valued Ferrari racing cars among collectors worldwide.

The Race

Daytona 1971

The 1971 24 Hours of Daytona was yet another demonstration of the Ferrari 512 S’s character. Although victory went to Porsche, the Ferraris delivered a strong performance and managed to reach the podium thanks to the North American Racing Team (NART). Facing stiff competition from the Porsche 917, the Italian sports car stood out for its speed, its spectacular sound, and its ability to fight for the top positions during one of the world’s most prestigious endurance races. A race that reinforced the legend of a model that continues to fascinate enthusiasts even today.
